Some back-story on the video:
Californians use 60% to 80% of their domestic water outside the home, pouring it directly on the ground and use 40% or less indoors. California’s population will double in the next 20 to 25 years. The double number of homes will still use the same amount inside, but only 20% of our water will be available for landscaping. This means that our yards will get 1/6 of their current water.
Switching to native plants saves up to 90% of the water used by common landscaping materials. This is about as much as they will get in the future. Yearly savings of $600 to $800 are possible on water alone. Another $1,200 to $1,800 per year savings comes when you fire your yard care guy – since your yard no longer needs constant care.
Other advantages natives bring to the garden is they are hardy and generally disease-free, they attract native insects which include predatory insects as well as butterflies, and they require no fertilizer or toxic chemical sprays.
