Presented by the Ventura County Master Gardeners
The Community and School Gardening Class is a new, hands-on training class provided by the Ventura County Master Gardeners. The course’s purpose is to train groups of volunteers interested in school, community or home gardens.
Do you know a school that wants a garden program, but doesn’t know how to start? Or a neighborhood crying out for a small community garden? Or perhaps a family with a bare backyard and a need for fresh food?
The course will give you all the basic knowledge you need to successfully start a new garden in any of these places. Just imagine how much good you can do, anywhere, with a little knowledge and experience. Imagine working with your new-found fellow volunteers doing real genuine good, making a real impact on people’s lives. Imagine being a hero.
The programs will be given in a live situation – you will work with guidance from Master Gardeners and create your own garden plot. At the end of the day, you will be part of a cadre of trained volunteers, prepared to build more gardens in more schools and neighborhoods.
This gardening training will give you a basis in raised bed vegetable gardening, with an emphasis on organic container gardening techniques. You’ll learn how to design a vegetable garden, literally from the ground up, and practice vegetable garden planting, both from seeds and transplants, understand vegetable garden planning by season, and be confident growing your own vegetables.
Our first training class will be held on Saturday, July 31st, starting at 9:00 and ending at noon at La Mariposa School in Camarillo, 4800 Corte Olivas, Camarillo; a map to the training site is here.
